Personalised 'Remembrance' Typographic Artwork

Recently we received a commission to create a very special remembrance piece of typographic artwork, in memory of a gorgeous little girl called Dora, aged 5, who died suddenly last January after a bacterial infection.

I was so moved by this piece, and several others that we have created in memory of loved ones over the last couple of years, that I got in touch with Dora's parents to ask if they would mind me sharing her design so that we offer this as a new standard product to our customers. I'm so pleased that they love their piece and look at it every day, and I am grateful to them for allowing me to share it.

I am truly honoured to be able to capture some wonderful memories for families who have lost a loved one.

Last year Dora's parents raised enough money for a magical school library, which they wanted to create to allow Dora's imagination and love of stories to live on. Isn't it lovely?

Award Winning More Than Words - UK.COM Awards WINNER

I have some very exciting news to share with everyone this afternoon...

More Than Words, yes little old me, has been selected as the OVERALL WINNER of the UK.COM awards, judged by a very impressive panel of entrepreneurs including Sarah Beeny (click here to see who)!!!

This morning I was officially awarded my £5000 prize!! (professional pics and press release coming soon). I'm so proud and can't wait to invest my winnings in the business.

How did it all happen?
A few months ago I received an email from the Director of the UK.COM awards. More Than Words had been selected, from a list of thousands of nominated websites (ending with a uk.com domain name), as a finalist in the national UK.COM awards.

Then, a month or so ago I received a call to inform me that I had been selected as the WINNER!!! It's been difficult keeping it to myself until today.

Here are some details from the original Press Release (a new one will be launched next week):

3 February 2011. London, UK. Global leaders in their fields including Microsoft, Avon, and Radiohead are among the finalists in the 2011 awards for websites using domain names with the ending .UK.COM, together with such well-known British companies as Pineapple Dance Studios, the Michelin starred restaurant Sketch and live music venue, Koko.

The twenty-four finalists in four categories represent the cream of British inventiveness in business and creative endeavours. The overall winner will be revealed at the end of the month, receiving a £5000 prize for either the business or the business’s charity of choice.

Ben Crawford, CEO of UK.COM parent company, London-based global domain name registry CentralNic, said: “We are delighted that such esteemed organizations have selected UK.COM domain names as the web addresses for their smartest ideas and most creative executions. Recently I was approached by the design team at 60 Minute Makeover, the ITV1 daytime show which attracts an audience of up to 1.8 million viewers daily.

Interior designer Julia Kendell had come across my work and was desperate to get her hands on a personalised bus blind for her latest home makeover in Berkhamsted. Of course I was happy to help capture the favourite places of her deserving couple!

I was informed yesterday that the show would air at the end of this year, or possibly early next year (a long time to wait!), so I was delighted to find out that my favourite photographer friend Eddie Judd's other half, a camera man, is filming on set for this episode today and he has very kindly sent through these sneaky peeks!

Follow your dreams...Happy Birthday More Than Words!!!

Today we are celebrating! More Than Words is officially one year old! On this very day last year I took the step to register the company, and I’m quite overwhelmed that my ‘little idea’ has now grown into a global, award-winning business.

I am writing this post to share how the company has grown, some of my achievements along the way, and also with the hope that it might inspire others to follow their dream of setting up a business.

How it all began…

The idea for More Than Words stemmed from my struggle to find a piece of meaningful artwork for our home, in colours to match the interior, which would also be a great talking point. So, I thought it would be a great idea to capture all of our special family memories as a unique piece of typographic art.

Once the artwork was up on the wall, I had so many requests from friends and family to create a similar piece for them that I realized this could be actually be a viable business venture, and the perfect job to fit in around two young children. It had always been a dream to run my own business.

Of course, it wasn’t quite as straight forward as that. Having spent ten years working in management roles, my background isn’t in graphic design, but that’s where my creative passion lies and always has. So, I spent endless evenings teaching myself the ropes, researching the best software applications, online tutorials, books from the library…. I then had to find the best place to source premium quality art supplies, and come up with a range of products that would sell.

All of this with a sixth month old baby and 2.5 year old toddler to take care of, but I was determined to get back into business and luckily my learnings from the ‘corporate world’ were a great foundation on which to build More Than Words.

Embracing social media…

Once the website was launched, built from scratch by my super supportive husband (with a little help from me), it was time to market the products and my first stop was Twitter.

I guarantee that More Than Words would not be where it is today if it was not for the power of social media. Facebook and Twitter have played huge roles in its success, exposing me to interior designers, corporate commissions, journalists, celebrity clients, retailers, collaboration opportunites…and of course loyal customers. I also have regular readers of my blog which is a great way to promote new products, competitions and recent work.

I was over the moon that Theo Paphitis endorsed More Than Words as part of his Twitter Small Business Sunday initiative, which you can read all about on a previous blog post here.

In fact today is also my 1^st Twitter birthday! More Than Words (@morethanwordart) now has well over 2000 followers, many of whom are repeat customers. Thank you to all who follow my ramblings.

So how do I manage my time?

A question that I always get asked. Well, what started as a part-time job now requires full-time attention, just with strange working hours. I juggle my children and the business during the day and work into the evenings and weekends. I have recently had to enlist the help of another designer to cope with demand as it was becoming physically impossible to keep on top of orders and run the business.

I never pretend it's easy but doing something that I love means that I somehow find the energy to juggle it all. I'm amused at the amount of customers who contact More Than Words under the impression that the business is manned by a team of office staff and designers and are shocked to learn that it's pretty much just me, myself and I.

I am lucky to have a very supportive husband who helps as much as he can with the children, home and the business. He is chief website developer and also my accountant. I couldn't do this without him x

A few awards…

Last summer I was delighted to be shortlisted as a finalist in the Mumpreneur UK awards in the ‘Most Unique Product’ category. I didn’t win but it was a fantastic achievement after less than six months in business. It was also a great networking event and I met some lovely ‘mumpreneurs’ at the conference who I have stayed in touch with. I urge all to enter this year!

Most recently, the More Than Words website and business concept has been awarded ‘Best Creative Idea’ (using a UK.COM website) in the UK.COM awards. A national initiative, judged by Sarah Beeney and a host of others. You can read more about the awards here. There are four category winners in total which means we are now down to a 25% chance of winning the £5000 grand prize!

The ‘Vintage Framed Canvas’, my signature piece, has been a huge it. It has featured in wedding blogs, such as Love My Dress, and print magazines (see press details) around the world and has been shipped to faraway lands.

I’m very lucky that More Than Words typographic artwork continues to feature in print, with our most recent article currently gracing shelves inside Singapore’s leading ‘Home & Decor’ magazine. You will soon be able to spot the original Vintage Framed Canvas ‘on location’ at a Homes & Gardens magazine shoot in their June issue. I was also recently asked to design a surprise piece for a London couple taking part for Channel 5’s Cowboy Builders programme which will air in the summer.

High profile clients include Dannii Minogue and screenwriter, film director Richard Curtis, two Heads of the BBC, and More Than Words artwork decorates the walls of well-known corporate clients. Sadly, I can’t name-drop any others ;-) but they do include the one of the UK’s top selling recording artists, one of Britain’s richest retail magnates and a the owner of a well-known fashion label!

And yes, I do all of the marketing and PR myself! The first year has been a real learning experience on the marketing side of things, and I think I’ve tried just about all forms of advertising now! By doing that though, I’ve learnt what forms work best for More Than Words.

So what lies ahead?

This year there are lots of exciting things in the pipeline, unfortunately most of which I can’t reveal yet so you’ll just have to stay tuned.

Some useful tips if you're just starting out...

Understand Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). Without this your website, and therefore your products, will be lost.
Customer service and satisfaction is key. Always go above and beyond. (More Than Words is listed with verygoodservice.com, a website dedicated to award winning companies who have excellent customer service feedback).
Build great relationships with your suppliers and retailers.
Competition is fierce. Always remain professional and don’t get caught up in it. It’s amazing the lengths people will go to try and bring you and your business down. The best thing you can do is keep your chin up and strive to be even more successful. Karma will most certainly catch up with them in the end.
Embrace social media as much as time will allow. It’s reach is amazing and, apart from your time, it’s free.
Accept that you will make mistakes , "The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing." ~John Powell
Try different forms of advertising to learn which works best for your business.
Support others, you never know when you might need their help in return!
Remember to make some 'me time'.

I've worked with several corporate clients over the last year but don't often find the time to capture the output on the MTW blog, so I wanted to take a moment today to share my most recent commission.

I was asked by one of my new corporate clients, Eton Bridge Partners - an executive search and interim management partnership, to create a few pieces of artwork to decorate the walls of their lovely new offices. "Something a little bit different from the standard office artwork, meaningful to the business, and in line with our new brand image and colours."

My artwork has sold very well (and I was very excited when one of the company's Managing Directors, Holly Tucker, ordered one of our bespoke 'Destination Blind' canvases for her husband last autumn!) and last week I took the step to apply to become a NOTHS partner. Today I was contacted by a journalist from Singapore's leading interior design magazine, Home & Decor, requesting to feature More Than Words, after coming across my work and "loving the concept". I have been lucky enough to feature in many online blogs around the world but this is very exciting as it will be my first international printed feature...all the way over in Singapore!

This got me thinking about how many customers across the world now own one of my designs. To my surprise, in less than a year since the business was launched, More Than Words typographic artwork now decorates homes in over 20 countries across 5 continents of the globe! Last week alone artwork was sent out to Florida, Spain, UK, Australia and Germany.

I am very proud of this and how my little business idea has grown so organically. I look forward to sharing the Home & Decor feature (if I can get my hands on a copy) and hope that it brings in even more lovely international customers!
